Sokar

Sokar is a fictional character in the science fiction television series Stargate SG-1 played by David Palffy. He replaced Apophis as the principal enemy of SG-1 for a very short period of time, until he and his mothership were vaporized by an explosion caused by the destruction of Netu, the moon around his homeworld of Delmak. Although he was mentioned as a growing threat to the galaxy in several episodes, he only appeared in person in a single 2-episode story arc, at the end of which he was apparently killed.

While the other Goa'uld maintain power over their subjects by impersonating gods, Sokar preferred to take on the persona of the Devil, often transforming the lands he ruled (including at one time the entire Earth) into terrible wastelands. Sokar was also associated with the Unas, who served as his "demons" to the superstitious human population. In one episode, Sokar portrayed himself as Satan to a small world of Medieval Christians with Goa'uld-possessed Unas acting as his demons. It is possible that at one time Sokar used a Unas body. His current human body is completely hairless, chalk-white with black veins, dressed in a red hooded robe, and decidedly creepy-looking.

Sokar was once the Supreme System Lord, but he was incredibly cruel even by the standards of the Goa'uld, so eventually an alliance of other Goa'uld including Ra and Apophis banded together to overthrow him (these Goa'uld would form the modern incarnation of the System Lords that SG-1 confronts). Even in exile Sokar remained the most powerful individual Goa'uld, although not as powerful as the combined might of the System Lords. However, he continued to expand his fleet, to the point where he had enough power to overthrow the System Lords and conquer the galaxy. Before Sokar could implement his plan, he was destroyed by the combined efforts of SG-1, the Tok'ra, and Apophis. While SG-1 and the Tok'ra destroyed Sokar in hopes of preventing the rise of a single all-powerful Goa'uld, they merely allowed Apophis to assume control of Sokar's fleet and implement his own plan for galactic domination.

Although Daniel Jackson describes Sokar as "the original Satan", in reality the mythological Sokar was a minor funeral god who wasn't particularly evil. In fact Apophis/Apep, the ultimate evil in Egyptian mythology and the one who seeks the destruction of the world, is much closer to the character of Satan.

Palffy would also play Anubis in Stargate SG-1, another extremely powerful Goa'uld who was considered far worse than the majority of his race.
